Tuberculosis: vaccines, diagnostics and experience
This is a special seminar marking the centenary of Franz Kafka's death, as we examine the disease that took his life: TB (tuberculosis), and how Oxford is at the forefront of addressing this major global challenge. The seminar, recorded at the Weston Library, features leading researchers from the University of Oxford, supported by the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre, who are tackling one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases. A talk from a former patient on the lived experience puts the work in perspective.
In this video, you'll hear from:
• Prof. Helen McShane, Deputy Head of the Medical Sciences Division and Director of the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre, who discusses her groundbreaking work on new TB vaccines.
• Dr. Philip Fowler, who explains the crucial role of genetics in identifying drug-resistant TB strains and developing targeted treatments.
• Amy, a patient representative, who shares her personal journey through the challenges of TB diagnosis and treatment.

Figuring it out. How patient data can transform diagnosis, treatment and care in the NHS
Переглядів 2514 місяці тому
How is your healthcare data being used? It’s a contentious topic, with fears around patient confidentiality, but the patient data held by the NHS is an incredibly rich resource for understanding and fighting some of our deadliest diseases. In this talk, Professor Eva Morris, Professor of Health Data Epidemiology and Oxford BRC Theme Lead for Translational Data Science, explained how harnessing ...

Can we really replace the hospital? - Prof. Dan Lasserson
Переглядів 37710 місяців тому
Professor Dan Lasserson was one of the first doctors in the country to provide hospital care at home using a range of point of care diagnostic technology, which allows clinicians to look after people with more complex acute illness who previously would be taken straight to hospital. Here, in an NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) public talk at the Said Business School on 11 October 20...
NIHR Oxford BRC public talk: How will using blood tests to detect cancer change the NHS?
Переглядів 302Рік тому
There is growing interest in the possibility of using blood tests to detect cancer. If such tests become available, they could transform how we diagnose and look after people with the disease. This offers exciting possibilities, but also many potential pitfalls. Blood tests could be used to screen apparently healthy people for cancer, to decide who should have more tests, or even replace scanni...
Richard Bulbulia presents Surgery or stents - which is more effective in preventing stroke?
Переглядів 213Рік тому
Stroke is the second largest cause of death worldwide, responsible for over six million deaths each year. A common cause of stroke is carotid artery disease, which can be treated in one of two ways: carotid artery surgery; or having a stent fitted, with a view to improving blood flow to the brain. Until recently, it has been unclear which of these procedures results in better overall patient ou...

When we involve patients, carers and other members of the public in our research - including them in the design and delivery of our clinical trials and studies - it improves it and ensures it benefits the people and communities who need it most. This is how paranoia is created. It's all about hiding another problem. Which you have to live with for the rest of your life. But to live alone without a partner despite otherwise being healthy. Is not normal. Being gay is an option. Every time microphones do not work on transmission, I feel hit. Does that mean I'm sick. No rather healthy. When I went to school in the 70's. So the microphone had a tendency to always break. I felt frustrated did not know why. But once I pulled over the microphone that recently worked. Because it does not work when I took it. I hit it on the hill. This is how you create Persecution mania. I do not remember the incident but my whole body I feel uncomfortable every time a microphone does not work in live broadcast. + Long sound pauses. Yes, how much can I tell you about that is about rehearsing the events of Paulov's Dog Technology.

It is a REQUEST to world MEDICAL SCIENTISTS that they develop ORAL MEDICINES ( ONE SHOT FOOD MEDICINE ) WHICH CAN STOP OR CONTROL BREEDING OF STRAY ANIMALS world over. IT WOULD BE BETTER THAT THEY DEVELOP A ONE SHOT MEDICINE WHICH AIMS AT PERMANENT INFERTILITY OF STRAY CATS AND DOGS. NEUTERING/SPAYING IS A STRENUOUS JOB. These stray animals are suffering enormously in every nook and corner of the world which go totally unnoticed. In a world where human beings hv no time for animals and where nobody has any emotion for helpless animals, we need to develop such ORAL MEDICINES which can be easily given to them orally thru FOOD which will go a long way to control their population and hence lessen their sufferings. PL DO SOMETHING ABOUT STRAY ANIMALS ALSO. IF Corona vaccine can be developed in just less than a YEAR, same way oral food medicines for controlling BREEDING of animals can also be developed in a YEAR......RICH PEOPLE should contribute to animal medical research centres for developing such oral medicines. Common man can also give a small TAX to fund animal medical research institutes. Developing oral infertility medicines would be the GREATEST animal rescue effort. People should STOP purchasing pets from breeders as they cause great pain to animals. Kindly RAISE VOICE against animal abuse and brutal animal killing for meat. Demand painless killing if you can't resist meat. KINDLY ADOPT VEGAN, PLEASE. 🙏

It wasn’t clear to me that the graphs showing the relationship between AF, cognitive impairment, etc. were showing causation or correlation. Were the results adjusted for age, etc.? Older people have worse kidney function AND more AF. The statistics may very well have been proper, it just wasn’t clear from the presentation.

Yes, back then it was all very extreme. Women were convinced that being objectified was a goal from childhood, and they would compete to get attraction from men, and would get adoration from their peers the more unhealthy they looked. This is astonishingly similar to the ideal of beauty, and people's attitude nowadays. Back then though, some women would purposely get infected just to achieve the look, and for those whose only option was to be homeless, it was a blessing so they could get work, and therefore shelter and food, even if it was just during their short lives. It's all very terrible, and it's a shame to witness how little things have improved. Women obsessed with looking unhealthily thin, getting surgery, risking their lives and neglecting their emotional, physical and mental health just so they can feel they have true worth, being criticized all along, and criticizing others, thus perpetuating this madness. How can this be stopped?

“Too good and too beautiful to live” ...wow. Today’s society still projects the idea that a woman’s beauty is directly correlated with her worth, yet it seems in the early 19th century her beauty meant she deserved death just by the virtue of being conventionally attractive for that time period. Misogyny is one hell of a drug

My concern regarding HCQ lies in the video's timestamp of 7:01 where you state for hydroxychloroquine "see protocol for dosing" to which l went to the released file on medrxiv and it shows that you were giving your patients "800mg at zero and six hours, followed by 400mg starting at twelve hours after the inicial dose and then every 12 hours" making the first day a combined dosage of 2 grams of hydroxychloroquine and the remaining days a dosage of 800mg... l don't seem to find anywhere in the medical literature such a high dosage considering that 6.5mg/kg/day is expected to be the maximum daily dose. ls there somewhere where it's explained the logic to giving, to my opinion, a woefully toxic dosage of HCQ in the treatment of COVID-19?
